I was just fascinated by the logic of this. The wall appeared to be crumbling a bit. So, to protect the pedestrians they put up barricades so people wouldn't get hit by falling pebbles. Instead, you're forced to walk down the middle of the street open to whatever horrors await you from being hit by a crazy Italian taxi driver.
